“Lips darken for ordinary reasons — sun, heat, smoking, and the habit of licking them when they are dry. Oils help with the dryness and the roughness, and with time the colour usually settles as the surface recovers. What they will not do is lighten the natural colour of your lips, and I would be wary of anything that claims to. If your lips split at the corners again and again, that is often something else entirely and worth asking about.”

Kumkumadi thailam and Nalpamaradi keram are the same two classical oils that go into our under-eye balm — the saffron oil the texts reserve for the face, and the four-bark oil Kerala has used on skin for centuries. Here they sit in shea butter and madhuchishta, beeswax, which keep them on the lip rather than letting them slide away.
Where the Berry Glow balm is for everyday dryness, this one is for lips that have gone past that: chapped, cracking at the surface, or darkened from sun and habit.
There is no flavouring in it and no menthol — which is why it suits children as well as adults. Nothing in it invites licking, and nothing in it does harm if a child does.
Made in small batches at Thodupuzha and formulated by Dr Henna Anne Paul.

How to use+
Apply to clean, dry lips as often as needed through the day. For dryness that keeps returning, apply generously at night and leave it on. Lips lose most of their moisture while you sleep, and an overnight layer does more than any daytime application. Suitable for children. External use only.
Who it suits+
Lips that are chapped, cracking or darkened, rather than simply dry — for everyday dryness the Berry Glow balm is enough. Suits adults and children. Not vegan: it contains beeswax. A free consultation is available before you buy.
Before you start+
For lips only. Stop using it if any soreness, swelling or irritation appears. Do not share the pot — a lip balm passed around carries whatever the last person had. Store in a cool place; it will soften in heat and firm again as it cools.
