The skin here is the thinnest on the body, and most of what people complain about under the eye is dryness and shadow rather than pigment. That is what a balm can help with. Use a very small amount, keep it on the bone rather than the lid, and give it weeks rather than days. If your dark circles run in the family or come from sleep, no balm will change that — and I would rather tell you than sell you a second jar.

Two classical oils, made into something that stays where you put it.

Kumkumadi thailam is the saffron oil the texts reserve for the face. Nalpamaradi thailam is the four-bark oil Kerala has used on skin for centuries. Both are thin, and thin oils migrate — which is the last thing you want near the eye overnight.

So they are carried in shea butter and madhuchishta, beeswax, which hold them in place until morning. Vitamin E keeps the blend from turning.

Five grams looks small. It is meant to: the amount you need is less than you would think, and a jar lasts a long time when used correctly.

Made in small batches at Thodupuzha and formulated by Dr Henna Anne Paul.

Contains beeswax, so it is not vegan. Every order comes with a free consultation.

Ingredients+

Kumkumadi thailam, Nalpamaradi thailam, Shea butter, Madhuchishta (beeswax), Vitamin E

How to use+

At night, after washing your face. Warm a very small amount — less than a grain of rice — between your fingertips until it softens. Tap it gently along the orbital bone with your ring finger, which presses more lightly than the others. Stay on the bone; do not apply to the eyelid or close to the lash line. Leave it overnight and rinse in the morning. External use only.

Who it suits+

Dryness and the look of tired, shadowed skin around the eye. Suits most skin types. Not vegan — it contains beeswax. A free consultation is available before you buy.

Before you start+

Patch test on the inner forearm before first use. Keep it out of the eye itself. If it does get in, rinse with clean water. Apply to the bone around the eye, not the eyelid — anything on the lid will travel into the eye overnight. If any redness, itching or watering appears, wash it off and stop using it. Not for use on broken skin. For external use only. Keep out of reach of children. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
