The difference between this and the anti-dandruff oil is concentration, and I would rather say so than let the price imply something vaguer. This is the preparation at full strength in pure virgin coconut oil, and it can go anywhere on the body, not only the scalp. If you are dealing with something persistent or spreading, please use the consultation before you order rather than after. There is a great deal I can tell you in ten minutes that a product page cannot, and sometimes the answer is that you need something other than an oil.

Urukku velichenna is a method, not a marketing word. The herbs are cooked into the oil over hours until every trace of water has driven off, leaving what the plant carries held in the oil itself. It is slow, it cannot be hurried, and it is why this is made in small batches.

The base is virgin coconut oil and nothing else — no cold-pressed oil blended in to bring the cost down. Virgin coconut oil is the expensive one, pressed from fresh coconut rather than dried copra, and it is what this preparation is properly made in.

Danthapala, Wrightia tinctoria, is the herb Kerala reaches for when skin is dry and scaling. Neem sits alongside it.

This is the full-strength version. Our Anti-Dandruff Oil contains the same preparation at a much lower proportion, extended with cold-pressed coconut oil, which makes it gentler and cheaper for daily use. If you want the preparation itself, this is it.

A free consultation comes with every order.

Ingredients+

Virgin coconut oil, Wrightia tinctoria (Danthapala), Azadirachta indica (Neem)

How to use+

For the scalp, or for dry and rough areas anywhere on the body — elbows, knees, shins, wherever skin goes tight and scaly. A little goes a long way. This is concentrated, and more is not better. Massage in and leave at least an hour; overnight where it is needed most. Wash out with Triphala Shampoo when used on the scalp. Two or three times a week rather than daily. For everyday scalp use, our Anti-Dandruff Oil is the one made for it. If you are using this for a particular skin complaint, speak to one of our doctors first — the free consultation is there for exactly this, and what suits one person will not suit another. For external use only.

Who it suits+

Dry, rough or scaling skin on the body as well as the scalp, where a gentler oil has not been enough. Concentrated, so used two or three times a week rather than daily. If you have a diagnosed skin condition, or one you have not had looked at, use the free consultation before buying. Our doctors can tell you whether this is the right thing — and when it is not.

Before you start+

For external use only. Avoid the eyes. Patch test behind the ear or on the inner forearm before first use, particularly if you have reacted to neem before. Stop using it if the skin becomes sore, weeping or more irritated. Scaling that spreads, bleeds when lifted, or does not settle is worth having looked at rather than oiling. Virgin coconut oil solidifies below about 24 degrees. Stand the bottle in warm water; nothing is wrong with it. Keep out of reach of children. Store away from direct sunlight.
