“This is the plainest thing we make and, for dry skin, often the most useful. Applied to damp skin after a bath it does more than most creams, because it is holding water in rather than adding something. I use it on my own family. It is made by women a few kilometres from where I am writing this, by the method their mothers used, and I would rather buy it from them than from a refinery.”
Coconut oil the way Kerala has always made it. Fresh coconut milk is heated slowly until the water leaves and the oil separates — urukku velichenna. No copra, no solvent, no refining, no heat beyond what the method needs.
It is made for us by Kudumbashree women in our own community at Kozhikode. That is not a detail we added to the label afterwards; it is who makes it, and the reason it is made a hundred millilitres at a time rather than a thousand litres.
Pure coconut oil and nothing else. No herbs, no fragrance, no additives — which is why it can go on a baby, on dry skin, on hair, on anyone.
The smell is the smell of real coconut, and it is stronger than the refined oil most people are used to. That is what the method leaves behind.
A free consultation comes with every order.
Virgin coconut oil (urukku velichenna). Nothing else.
On skin: warm a little between the palms and apply to damp skin after a bath, when it absorbs best. For very dry skin, again before bed. On hair: work into the scalp and lengths, leave half an hour or overnight, and wash out. For babies: a small amount, warmed in the palms, with gentle strokes. Test the temperature on your own wrist first, and keep it away from the face and hands — small hands find their way to mouths. As often as you like. There is nothing in it to build up or overuse.
Dry skin and dry scalp, at any age. Gentle enough for babies. Nothing added, so nothing to react to beyond coconut itself. A free consultation is available before you buy.
For external use. Coconut allergy is uncommon but real — patch test on the inner forearm before first use, and before using it on a baby. Not for use on broken or weeping skin. For babies, keep it away from the face and hands, and never leave a child unattended with the bottle. It solidifies below about 24 degrees. Stand the bottle in warm water and it returns to liquid; nothing is wrong with it. Keep out of reach of children. Store away from direct sunlight.
